Self-care doesn’t have to be selfish.

In fact, when you focus on creating your best self, you can are better able to serve others around you.

Good health, a strong self-image, and a little bit of pampering are all important for building a better, more confident you. That’s why we’re focusing our New Year’s resolution on smoother, softer skin.

Here are 5 Tips for Smoother Skin

1. Stay Hydrated

To say that water is essential for a healthy life is a vast understatement; nearly 60% of the human body is composed of water.

But water also has tremendous effects on the skin.

Our skin, or epidermis, is the body’s largest organ. Like all organs in our bodies, it is comprised of call tissue. Drinking water is crucial for replenishing our cells with vital nutrients, flushing them of toxins, and maintaining a healthy internal ecosystem.

Staying hydrated helps keep the skin clean and moist, and also combats common skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Drinking plenty of water is the first step towards a moist, supple complexion.

Tip: Keep a reusable water bottle in your purse or on your desk as a constant reminder to get your 8 cups a day.

2. Wear Sun Protection

While soaking up the sun can be good to an extent, overexposure can have detrimental effects on the skin.

Without sun protection, the sun’s UVA and UVB rays penetrate into your skins deeper layer, or the  dermis, and promote the appearance of sunspots, wrinkles, and skin cancer. Too much time in the sun will cause your skin to age exponentially and leave you with coarse, leathery skin in later adulthood.

Tip: Switch out your foundation with tinted moisturizer so you never forget this step in the mornings.

3. Avoid Over-Washing

Yes- it’s a thing. Washing your skin too much can have counterproductive effects.

Soaps and body washes that you commonly find the in Health and Beauty aisle of the grocery store are filled with chemicals that strip the skin of its natural oils. Removing these oils can lead to dry and flaky skin, or, cause the skin to react and overproduce these oils, leading to a breakout.

The best way to maintain smooth skin is to only wash the necessary areas, like your underarms, on a regular basis. Unless you’re coming back from a sweaty gym session, your arms and legs don’t need to be washed every day.

Tip: Avoid soaps that create lots of suds- the chemical that causes this lathering effect is one of the greatest culprits against smooth skin. Opt for an essential-oil based soap instead.

4. Moisturize Regularly

We all know this one, but still many of us find an excuse to skip it. Give your skin the TLC it deserves.

Start with an unscented lotion or moisturizer to avoid any chemicals that may potentially irritate the skin.

Use it to moisturize your body everyday, and particularly, after every shower to restore any hydration you may have lost. The extra five minutes is well worth it for long-lasting softness and smoothness.

Tip: Try using pure, organic coconut oil. It’s antimicrobial and ultra-hydrating properties are perfect for trouble areas like elbows and knees.

5. Laser Hair Removal

It’s time to give up shaving for good. This outdated method of hair removal causes razor burn and prickly regrowth, making it nearly impossible to find truly smooth skin.

Laser hair removal is the best solution for depilation that lasts. After only a few sessions, you will begin to see the results.. After an entire course of treatment, you will experience nearly-permanent hair removal and softer, more touchable skin.
